At just 17, Ivy is proving that age is no barrier to purpose. What began as an idea sparked during a cooking summit has transformed into a thriving ministry—Cooking Capable—a hands-on, family-centered workshop series that teaches people of all abilities how to cook healthy, affordable, and delicious meals. But Ivy’s journey is more than just about food; it’s a testament to faith, courage, and the power of inclusion.

What Is Cooking Capable?
Cooking Capable is a workshop series built to:
- Teach basic cooking skills that promote independence
- Integrate adaptable physical activities for all abilities
- Foster a family-oriented, inclusive environment
- Inspire healthier habits through hands-on learning
This isn’t just about cooking—it’s about building confidence, capability, and community.
The Origin Story: Too Young? Think Again.
Ivy first conceived Cooking Capable at 15 after attending a 4-H cooking summit. Inspired but unsure, she initially dismissed the idea, thinking she was too young. That changed when a grant opportunity aligned with a clear message from God: start now.
“I kept hearing whispers—‘you’re too young, you’re not good enough’—but I decided to trust God and step through the doors He opened.”
Her first official workshop launched just after her 16th birthday. Since then, Ivy has hosted multiple workshops, mini classes, and conference presentations, showing what’s possible when faith meets action.
Why Cooking? Why Now?
Ivy’s love of cooking began at home with her siblings. A gift—a culinary textbook—planted a seed, and a summit brought it to life. Though her original dream was to be an actress, she realized she belonged in the kitchen.
“I love making people happy through food… it’s organized chaos, and I thrive in it.”
Through Cooking Capable, she discovered a deeper calling: empowering others—especially individuals with disabilities—to gain life-changing independence through cooking.
Empowerment in Every Dish
One participant, who dubbed himself “The Supervisor,” arrived saying he’d never cooked before—“That’s mom’s job.” By the end of the session, he was cooking, smiling, and proudly hearing, “Thank you for making it.”
Cooking Capable Builds Confidence By:
- Encouraging participants to take initiative
- Supporting learners at their own pace
- Celebrating every small win
- Involving entire families in the experience
As Ivy puts it, “When one of us isn’t welcome, none of us are.”
Equipped by Experience and Family
Ivy didn’t start with all the answers. She learned by doing—helping with communion, running slides, and leading lessons in her church’s disability ministry.
“I wasn’t qualified… but I became equipped as I went. I learned with them.”
Her siblings, who are part of the special needs community, continue to inspire her. Cooking Capable is built on this real-life foundation of empathy, lived experience, and love.
Faith as the Fuel
At the heart of Ivy’s journey is her faith.
“I’ve always had anxiety. But with God by my side, I could do this. I didn’t let the doubts stop me.”
Every workshop, every participant, every meal shared is a testimony to God’s faithfulness and Ivy’s obedience to follow His lead—despite her fears.
What’s Next for Cooking Capable?
The dream is growing, and Ivy has big plans:
- Expand nationally: Train churches, schools, and nonprofits to launch their own versions
- Continue education: Ivy begins culinary school this August
- Spread the message: Keep showing others how cooking can be a tool for transformation
Her biggest hope? To show people the love of Christ through food and fellowship.

Final Thoughts: You’re Never Too Young to Make a Difference
Ivy’s story reminds us that you don’t need a degree, a title, or years of experience to start something meaningful. You just need a willing heart, a bit of courage, and the faith to take that first step.
